Let’s get something perfectly straight – if you value clean,
new furniture, air-conditioning and good service, a community-based raw, vegan café
is probably not the best place for you to look for lunch. If, however, you can look past some gnarly
dreadlocks and appreciate haphazard service with a smile while you enjoy your
so-healthy-you-feel-like-you’re-glowing-inside food in the middle of an urban
garden oasis, head to the Fern Community Centre.
If you live in Perth and frequently drive down the monstrosity
that is the Leach Highway, you’ll probably have noticed the centre. It’s the one with the hand-painted signs out
the front promoting a free ‘bike exchange’.
I’d never been inside, but I decided to brave it – there’s not a lot of
raw/vegan food options in Perth so I was willing to slap on the bug spray and
leap into the jungle (literally, there are banana palms).
They have a new raw café inside the centre which is a
slapdash kitchen serving reasonable affordable raw pizza, burgers, sandwiches,
salads, cake, cookies and smoothies.
Despite the heat, I elected to sit out in the garden under an umbrella
with my raw pizza, admiring the truly awesome garden/vegetable patch/orchard.
