A short while ago, a friend of mine from London was in LA and we went out for dinner in West Hollywood.  He took me to a pure Americana-style saloon restaurant and said, “Are you going to be alright with this?  I’ve noticed on Facebook you eat a lot of healthy stuff.”

I try to eat lots of healthy stuff, I really do.  Every now and then I just want gummy bears or a cupcake or a pizza with lots and lots of mozzarella, but there are so many great options in LA for snacks and treats that aren’t going to reduce your lifespan by 15 years that I try to indulge in the less naughty options wherever I can.  I live West-side and quite honestly mostly stay West-side.  There are a whole lot of great vegan, vegetarian, health life-style options on this side of town.  When I’m particularly hankering for raw cake, vegan muffins, health smoothies, etc, there are a few go-to
options I always stick to.

Café Gratitude

Someone suggested to me recently that the owners of Café Gratitude must be laughing all the way to the bank.  It’s true, this is not a wallet-friendly place to pick up a snack, but if you want to stand in front of a window salivating over the most beautifully crafted raw cakes you’ve ever seen, then this is the place.  And of course there is a reason why these products are so expensive – they’re made of expensive ingredients and a lot of time and effort goes into making them.  The serves at the Venice CG treat the cakes like they’re made of fine porcelain – just watching them try to slice the perfect piece without damaging the rest of the cake is a performance in itself.  My favourite is the strawberry cake and when I can afford it, it’s the best $9 of the day I will spend.  They also have vegan baked goods if you’re not into the raw ‘thing’ or they have a wide range of smoothies, juices etc to take away.

Euphoria Loves Rawvolution

Much like Gratitude, Rawvolution is pretty pricey, but again, you know why you’re paying a premium price.  I probably prefer the selection of raw treats available at Gratitude, but Rawvolution wins hands down on smoothies.  I like to get snacks to take away and head on down to the beach two blocks away to enjoy them.

Venice Whole Foods

I have thought for a long time now that the Venice Whole Foods is the best in Los Angeles.  I have been to a lots of Whole Foods stores so I think I speak with some authority!  They have a counter just for raw food including cakes, cookies, puddings and other chocolate insanity, as well as raw savoury dishes.  Again, if the raw ‘thing’ doesn’t float your boat you’ve come to the best place in the area to find vegan and vegetarian food, whether you’re looking for a vegan donut of muffin, or you’re desperate for salad, sandwiches…you name it.  If you want something made without animals involved, you can find it here.  I’m particularly partial to their vegan blueberry muffins.
